Bearden pushes No. 1 Oak Ridge to the limit before falling 2-1
Alan Sloan - Thu, Oct, 30, 2003
Five lousy minutes ruined 75 excellent minutes of soccer for the Bearden Lady SoccerDawgs in their bid to knock off the state top-ranked team during the Region 2-AAA semifinals Oct. 21 in Oak Ridge.
Taking advantage of a failed clearing attempt in the BHS box to score the tying goal, then earning a penalty shot that was converted — both early in the second half — Oak Ridge survived for a 2-1 win that avoided a premature end to its season.
“We had a great effort, they went out there and competed and that’s what they did today,” BHS Head Coach Eric Turner said. “We’re real proud of them.”
Sarah Bumpas’ perfectly-placed shot from 25-yards out with 12:37 left in the first half gave Bearden a 1-0 lead that held up through halftime.
As for losing a close game to a powerful team, “it was just kind of a microcosm of our season,” Turner said. “We came out and played an awesome first half, and we played a great 35 minutes of the second half. It was just that five-minute window where they put in two goals. That’s kind of how our season’s been.
“Our defense did great all year, and really did a great job today,” Turner added. “But for five-minutes we fell asleep.”
Seniors Eliza Rudder, Susan Ward, Hollie Osborne, Erin Flanagan, and Brittany Bemis played their final game in a BHS uniform Tuesday. Bearden ends with a 13-6-2 record.
FIVE ARE ALL-4-AAA
Led by Shea Kinzer, named District 4-AAA’s Defender of the Year, five Bearden girls earned All-district honors: Kinzer, Eliza Rudder, Susan Ward, Alex Meehan, and Mary Alex Rochester.
