Five-story buildings may find way into Parkside commercial district

The town is considering allowing five-story buildings in the commercial district on the north side of Parkside Drive near Sweet Briar subdivision.

“We will need a special zone for Parkside Drive to incorporate this,” Mayor Eddy Ford said at last week’s Farragut Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting.

Ford said if such an ordinance is put in place it would allow developers to incorporate parking into their buildings and act as a sound barrier from the interstate for Sweet Briar residents.

Ruth Hawk, community development director for the town, said there is already an ordinance in place for that would allow for five-story buildings.

“There is an ordinance in place that allows for buildings to be 70 feet,” she said. “You can get five stories into 70 feet.”

Hawk said she is unsure if there will be discussion to allow more than 70-foot buildings at that location.

“It may very well be something new,” she said.
