9th-ranked BHS girls rebound from FHS loss

Eric Turner wasn’t too pleased with his Bearden Lady SoccerDawgs’ offensive performance in a 3-1 loss to arch-rival and District 4-AAA foe Farragut, currently ranked second in the state, on Sept. 23 at FHS.

The state’s 9th-ranked Class AAA BHS girls were unable to generate much offense beyond Susan Ward’s breakaway goal from 10 yards out during the middle of the first half, giving Bearden a short-lived 1-0 lead.

But over the weekend during a four-team round-robin tournament at McMinn County High School in Athens, the Lady SoccerDawgs put it all together.

Three straight shutouts and much improved offense play resulted in victories against McMinn (1-0) on Friday, then against Ooltewah (6-0) and Science Hill (2-0) on Saturday.

“It was by far our best weekend,” Coach Turner said. “Offensively, we did a lot of good things, things started coming together for us.”

Individually, Turner praised senior forwards Ward and Eliza Rudder, along with freshman Mary Alex Rochester.

Against McMinn, Ward’s second half goal, assisted by Janie Dance, was the difference.

In the rout of Ooltewah, Ward scored twice while Meredith Kelly came through with three assists. Single goals came from Shea Kinzer, Rochester, Alex Meehan and Sarah Bumpas. Nina Carter and Ward each had one assist.

Rochester and Ward scored for Bearden against Science Hill.

As for the stingy BHS defense at McMinn, “they did a great job also,” Turner said, “the whole defensive unit.”

The Lady SoccerDawgs entered this week with a 9-4-2 record, finishing second in the district behind Farragut at 4-1

BHS Senior Night is Oct. 7 at Bearden Stadium versus Dobyns-Bennett, starting at 7 p.m.
