FHS golf pair in state’s top-5

Despite missing out on a chance to compete for a state team title in golf, three Farragut High School Lady Admirals looked to make noise individually during last week’s Class AAA state tourney in Crossville.

Lady Admiral freshman Erika Thornton overcame back problems and finished fourth (164) after 36 holes at the Bear Trace course Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. She was 14 shots behind individual champ Taylor Cooper of team champ Rossview. Thornton’s teammate, junior Megan Cox, took fifth (165).

“I thought they both played extremely well under the conditions, it was very cold and windy, it was tough conditions to play in,” FHS coach Mike Driver said. “And the course was playing really hard, the greens were extremely fast.”

FHS sophomore Carolyn Levy tied for 19th (174).

As for the future, “I’ve got all my girls back next year,” Driver said. “Megan will be the only senior.”

FHS BOYS

Brandon Bunn was low scorer (159) for the FHS boys, who as a team finished sixth in the state after being in fourth-place following the first day Sept. 30.

Carl May shot 161, followed by Charlie Holman and Brad Meccia who tied at 165.

“This is a young team,” Driver said. “To get back to state after losing all that we did last year with the three seniors is good.”
