Help save a life: town, farragutpress sponsor blood drive

The farragutpress and the town of Farragut will be sponsoring a blood drive Friday, Jan 9, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Medic Regional Blood Center is urging people with O-Negative and O-Positive blood to donate blood.

There are no pints of O-negative blood to fill hospital needs in Medicís 21-county region. Plus, the O-positive supply is critically low.

Although O-type supplies are critically low, donors of all blood types are needed. The holiday season traditionally is a slow time for donations, and this year many donors are not able to donate due to illnesses. Donations of all blood types are short by 100 to 125 pints a day.

A brief listing of other Medic blood drive times and locations scheduled for this week follows:

Thursday, Jan. 8:

ē Knox County Health Department Community Room, 140 Dameron Ave., Knoxville, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Friday, Jan. 9:

ē Powell United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 323 West Emory Rd., Powell, from 1 to 7 p.m.

ē Farragut Town Hall Community Room, 11408 Municipal Center, Farragut, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Each donation can save up to three lives. Donors must have positive identification, and be at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds.

There is no upper age limit for donating blood.

Besides a Medic T-shirt, donors also receive a free cholesterol level evaluation (no fasting required) and Medicís Family Blood Coverage.

Individual donations may be used for the donorís and/or the donorís familyís own coverage, as a replacement or substitution for someone elseís coverage.

Family coverage means that one donation a year until the Medic exempts the donor and his/her IRS dependents from paying blood supplier processing fees at any U.S., hospital if a transfusion is needed.

New individual members are covered except for pre-existing conditions.

You canít give a better gift than one that saves a life.
