FBMA keys in on emergency vehicles

The Farragut Board of Mayor and Aldermen has approved an ordinance to better enforce emergency vehicle access lanes in town.

“They need better enforcement,” said Dan Johnson, fire marshal for the town.

Johnson said the current municipal code called for citing the owner of a business if a vehicle is found in the emergency vehicle access lane in front of their establishment.

“That really doesn’t correct the problem,” Johnson said.

The fire marshal showed the FBMA examples of multiple cars parked in emergency vehicle access lanes around town.

“It’s quite evident that fire lanes are being ignored,” Johnson said. “When I’ve confronted (violators), I’ve been told ‘What are you going to do about it?’”

The FBMA voted 3-0, Mayor Eddy Ford and Alderman Joel Garber were absent, to change the ordinance to allow violators to be cited by either the “fire official for the town of Farragut, or his designee” to Farragut Municipal Court.

“It would be handled like a parking ticket,” Johnson said.

In addition, the owner of the business could be cited “if they are part of the problem,” he added.

Before the ordinance can be enforced it will have to be approved by the FBMA on a second reading.
