Blankenship leads reduced FHS wrestling team at GIT

With Farragut High School’s three best wrestlers out of action due to injuries — all three ranked among the top five statewide in their Division I weight classes — it was almost impossible for a high team finish during the Greeneville Invitational Tournament last weekend.

“We only took seven kids,” FHS co-head coach Joe Knox said of the thinned ranks without Erick Abercrombie in the 112-pound class (knee injury), Scott Dix at 140 (bruised nose) and second-ranked Justin Knox at 171 (toe).

Among a tough 18-team field, Chad Blankenship (160) led FHS with a second-place finish. “He just wrestled a real good tournament,” coach Knox said. “He had four pins and one decision in the semifinals. Then he got beat in the finals by a defending state champ that’s private school (Division II).”

Paul Mountain (125), back from an early December knee injury that required minor surgery, took fourth. “I was really pleased with Paul, this was his first tournament since being out and having surgery,” coach Knox said.

Ryan Farinella (145) and Chuck Layton (130) each finished sixth. Brandon Lazuras (215) took eighth.

The Admirals took a 12-4 dual meet record into this week’s action.
