The best of both worlds for women is located in the shopping center at the corner of Campbell Station and Grigsby Chapel roads.

Garde Bien SpaSalon offers a plethora of services to make its clients feel and look good, said owner Stacey Handel.

“The word spa/salon says a lot,” she said. “(Customers) can get all the services they want in one location, and in one day.”

Handel opened the business September 2000 after moving to the area in 1997 from Dallas, Texas, where she operated Stacey Handel’s Designs.

With more than 20 years experience as a stylist, she has helped sculpt looks for several large corporations and brides-to-be.

Some of her work has even been seen in the Tennessee wedding magazine, I Do.

“I did hair and make-up for some of the models in the magazine,” she said. “We’ve been called upon many times to do that.”

Although she has a wealth of hair, make-up and clothing knowledge, Handel said she wanted to add spa services to her list because “I wanted a business that had services I was familiar with and the spa services.”

After some research and visits to world-renowned spas in such places as Los Angeles, Calif., and Scottsdale, Ariz., Handel opened her own more than 3,100 square-foot spa/salon. Only 2,600 square-feet of the facility is being used, the additional 500 square-feet will later be finished for treatment and service rooms and offices, Handel said.

Although her spa/salon isn’t as big as those in larger markets, she designed Garde Bien to “accommodate the Knoxville area.”

“It’s a charming, friendly place,” she said. “We have high-tech function and everyone knows your name, kind of like ‘Cheers.’”

But Handel isn’t without help in her quest to sculpt looks and relax her clients; she has 15 employees, which includes five stylists, five spa technicians and three coordinators.

“All of the staff have advanced education on a lot of techniques,” she said.

Recently two of her stylists attended a workshop in New York City and learned Japanese Thermal Straightening, a new technique that has gained recognition after being featured on “Oprah.”

“It’s great for people who have unmanageable, undesirable frizzy, curly hair,” Handel said.

Garde Bien’s Hair Spa has a number of other services too, such as executive, fashion and designer cuts, perms and hair coloring.

Customers are urged to discuss the look they want with their stylist, who will then choose the services that best fit their desires.

Handel’s staff also offers custom blend make-up sessions using mineral cosmetics.

“It’s beautiful and it’s becoming much more popular,” she said.

The mineral cosmetics are “safe and healthy,” Handel said, because they are free of oil, preservatives, dyes, talc and alcohol.

The Nail Salon also offers a wide range of manicures and pedicures and customers can select from a variety of skin care services.

If customers just want to relax, Body Spa technicians can indulge them in a traditional Swedish or deep tissue massage or body treatment, including salt glow, moor mud body wrap and customized body scrub.

To enhance the spa/salon experience Handel designed Garde Bien to separate the various services.

“A lot of people get their hair cut in an open room,” she said. “We pride ourselves in that our services are divided. That keeps the noise and smells from overlapping and allows people to relax.”

With the wedding season rapidly approaching, Handel said brides-to-be might want to stop by Garde Bien. The spa/salon specializes in bridal services.

“We help them prepare a schedule up to their wedding day,” she said. “We have a recommended schedule that we try to encourage to make that day less stressful and special.”

Their staff can help brides-to-be design an idea for a hairstyle, clip or tiara.

“We make them feel especially gorgeous on their wedding day,” Handel said.

Garde Bien also offers services for grooms.

“The groom is not forgotten,” Handel said. “We help the groom feel better about his look.”

Grooms can get a haircut, pedicure and manicure.

“A manicure would be great to show off the new wedding band,” Handel said.
