Ice Volsí season ends on sour note against state rival MTSU


A frustrating University of Tennessee Ice Vols hockey season ended Saturday night at the Icearium with a Blue Raider sweep.

Following up on a 12-3 blowout win against UT Friday night, Middle Tennessee State swept the series thanks to a 9-5 victory Saturday.


In addition to the frustration of losing its head coach in mid-season, Tennessee finished with a disappointing 6-19 record in American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II competition.

Aaron Hartness joined Dale Scherholz as the Ice Volsí top performers Saturday. Scherholz closed out the season with two goals while Hartness scored one goal and added three assists.

Scherholz, Jon Benner and Adam Bogren each finished the season in a three-way tie for most team points with 43, Benner led the Ice Vols in goals with 24, adding 19 assists. Bogren led UT in assists with 29, adding 14 goals. Scherholz ended with 19 goals and 24 assists. Hartness was fourth in total points with 13 goals and 16 assists. Levi Smithey was fifth with 14 goals and nine assists.
