LetterToTheEditor — Reader questions Greene’s point on Gore’s military

Dear Editor:

While it seems a bit absurd to characterize any place in Vietnam in 1970 being “safe,” one has to wonder at the relevance of Mr. Greene’s letter to the current political debate and to wonder why it was determined newsworthy enough to be printed in your pages.

Al Gore and, for that matter, Bill Clinton are long gone from the White House. They are way past yesterday’s news. George W. Bush is in the White House and John Kerry is running against him. It is perfectly legitimate to compare their actions in Vietnam, but assigning the actions of previous presidents or vice presidents of their parties to them is absurd.

Bringing out questions of Mr. Gore’s military service and using it to attempt to quiet the furor over Mr. Bush’s service is comparable to bringing out Watergate or Iran-Contra and using them in an attempt to smear Mr. Bush. They have no relevance to the current election, just as nothing Mr. Gore has done has any relevance to Mr. Kerry or Mr. Bush. It seems silly to me to waste column space pretending that they do.

Sincerely,

Dale Jenkins
