LetterToTheEditor — Girl Scouts offer thanks for cookie sale support

Dear Editor:

We know it’s spring in East Tennessee when we start hearing about Girl Scout Cookies. It’s a time of year to which we all look forward. Our taste buds seem to gear up in anticipation of that moment when our favorite Girl Scout cookies arrive and we are (finally) able to sink our teeth once again into those delicious morsels.

For our daughters, it is an electrically charged season filled with dreaming, planning and organizing. Those behind the cookie sale know that this program really is not about the cookies at all.

While the rest of us are happily munching on our favorite selections, girls are learning valuable lessons about teamwork, communication, management and goal-achievement. Our daughters use these same skills when involved in troop service projects that benefit the community. Through Girl Scouting, our daughters have real life opportunities to learn, practice and integrate positive skills and values that will serve them their entire lives. If you ask the girls, they’ll probably just tell you they have fun – and that’s to the credit of our wonderful and highly prized adult volunteers who always find a way to make it interesting.

We believe in the potential of every girl. We believe that every girl should have the opportunity to experience a positive mentoring relationship that serves to develop and nurture confidence and self-esteem. We believe every girl can grow up to be courageous and strong in her convictions, values and sense of self and community. When you volunteer your time and talents to our program, or make a charitable donation, you are also saying “I believe.”

When you purchase a box of Girl Scout cookies you are participating in and supporting a tradition, a mission and philosophy that has proven we all benefit when our daughters grow in character, competence and confidence. We thank our community for the consistent support of our Girl Scout cookie sale. As cookie booths begin to appear, consider the benefits of our program, and stop by and chat with the girls about why they are excited to be part of this program – and supplement your cookie supply while you’re at it.

Our thanks in advance!

Sincerely,

Deborah M. Schriver
