FHS student claims grand prize in Relay for Life poster/essay contest
- Thu, Mar, 25, 2004
Manaz Rusi Taleyarkhan, a student at Farragut High School, claimed the grand prize in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life poster and essay contest. The contest was open to students enrolled in any Knox County public or private school. Nearly 100 entries were received in the contest.
Manaz Rusi Taleyarkhan’s poster depicting a boxing match between a woman battling cancer and a cancer cell was selected as the poster winner in the 16-18 age category before being selected as the grand prize winner.
In the essay contest, Pervin Rusi Taleyarkhan, a student at Farragut High School, placed first in the 16-18 age group.
All entries were required to have a “Fight Cancer” theme. “The posters and essays were incredibly creative,” said Donna McNeilly, who chaired the contest.
“The object was for students to understand that everyone is touched by cancer and that there is hope for a cure. The work we saw in this contest demonstrates an understanding of that concept.”
