Soccer Ads blank Bearden
Staff Reports - Thu, Apr, 8, 2004
The defending Class AAA boys soccer state champions combined strong effort with just enough offense to hold off its archrival Thursday night in Farragut Stadium.
A first-half 20-yard goal from Cory Helton and a late-game goal by Ben Backstrom from eight yards out gave No. 1 state-ranked Farragut (10-1-0 record) a 2-0 win against No. 7 state-ranked Bearden (4-3-1) in a District 4-AAA showdown. "They stepped up real big," FHS head coach Wallie Culbreth said of Helton and Backstrom.
However, "I think the biggest key in us winning this game was that Bryan Hill played like Superman," Culbreth added about his senior stopper. "He was everywhere ... he totally controlled the middle of the field."
According to FHS statistics, the Admirals outshot the Bulldogs 24 to 6.
BHS head coach Eric Turner said he was unhappy with Bearden's physical play and determination — especially from the forwards. But Turner did praise his defense: James Totten, Preston Walker, Todd Vinsant, Alan Myers-Davis and goalie Bryan Walker, who made diving saves on three FHS on-goal shots.
