LetterToTheEditor — LeSage offers thanks for community support

Dear Editor,

My name is Matthew LeSage and I have a dream. My dream was first realized after my third-grade class was treated to the words of Elaine Machiela, the executive director of Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee.

It shocked me that 150,000 people went to bed hungry, every night, right here in my backyard. I wanted to do something, anything. I began donating Christmas and birthday money to Second Harvest.

As I gave more, I realized that my meager money could not even hold a candle to the need in our community alone. I more. Five years ago, I created “Hams for the Hungry” to provide Easter meals to those in need.

And, after five long years, we have been able to raise $60,000, which has been used to purchase over 15,000 hams provided by Elm Hill in Lenoir City.

So, on behalf of myself, Second Harvest Food Bank, and the 150,000 people who go hungry every day, thank you for your generous support.

P.S. I’m only 15 years old and STILL believe I can end hunger.
