Maltzberger takes top art honors

U.S. Rep. John J. Duncan Jr. presented Hali Maltzberger, a Bearden High School student, with “Best in Show” honors for the 2004 Congressional Art Competition.

The event took place Friday, May 7, at the Knoxville Museum of Art’s fourth-floor studio in downtown Knoxville’s Candy Factory.

Knoxville Museum of Art Director Todd Smith and contest judges Jim Gray, Paul Lee and Dorothy Habel were in attendance to assist with the presentation.

The following students also won first-prize honors in individual classifications:

Painting: Theresa Caudillo of South-Doyle High School;

Mixed Media: Chad Turner (Halls High School);

Photography: Odie Barstow of West High School;

Collage: Jay McMahan of Halls High School;

Drawing: Chelsee Brunson of Halls High School and Stan Bowie Jr. of Bearden High School.

Each participant will receive a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition, and Maltzberger will also be awarded a $3,000 scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design. Her winning piece, entitled “The Creative Process/Self-Portrait,” will now be sent to Washington, D.C., for display in a Capitol corridor.
