Lady Ad softballers ‘take the fifth’ in 4-AAA tourney, whip Bearden for 3rd time

For the third straight time this season the Farragut Lady Admirals softball team defeated the Bearden Lady Bulldogs.

And while this 4-1 victory Monday evening at Heritage High School came during the District 4-AAA Tournament, it followed the pattern of the Lady Ads’ first two wins — one big inning.

Bearden coach Mark Blevins said, “This is the third game in a row where Farragut has managed to put it together and come alive in one inning.”

This time it was the fifth inning, as the top-seeded Lady Admirals set a school record for victories in a season at 32 (32-7 record) when the bats came alive.

Vanessa Satterfield started off with a base hit. Stephanie Dueber followed up with a single sending Satterfield to second base. Cayla Smith ran for Satterfield and scored on a squeeze bunt by Amy Josephson.

Farragut coach David Moore said, “I give a lot of credit to Vanessa Satterfield for getting us going in the fifth. Kori Manes created pressure, and Amy Josephson got a perfect squeeze bunt down.”

Up next was Jessie Howard, who was intentionally walked. Kira Perkins got a hit bringing in Dueber, followed by a double by Jennifer Covell, driving two more runs and making it 4-0.

Bearden threatened in the bottom of the seventh, using an error, a double by Brittany Richardson and a base hit from Paige Harmony. The Lady Bulldogs were on the board with one run, but that would be all.

Margaret Morris went the distance for Farragut, giving up three hits and striking out four batters. “She’s consistent, she throws strikes, she doesn’t walk anybody,” Blevins said. “She’s got our number.”

Sally Gale pitched five innings for Bearden and Heather Broyles finished out the game.

Farragut advanced into the winners’ bracket against West Tuesday. The Lady Bulldogs, whose record stood at 34-12 after Monday’s loss, looked to stay alive in the loser’s bracket against William Blount Tuesday.

BHS 2 SOUTH-DOYLE 1

Left fielder Jennifer Walker robbed South-Doyle of an extra-base hit with a lunging catch with two runners on base and two out in the sixth-inning, preserving Bearden’s eventual 2-1 win in the second round of the 4-AAA tourney Friday.

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, an SDHS infield error plus Amy Goodrich’s double down the left field line tied the game, then Amy D’Andrea’s RBI single put BHS up for good.

Winning pitcher Gale went the distance, striking out eight while allowing four hits and one walk.

REGULAR SEASON:

FHS 4 WEBB 1

The Lady Admirals celebrated Senior Night on Wednesday, May 5, after defeating the Webb Lady Spartans 4-1 at Bellamy Field.

Down 1-0 entering the fifth-inning, Farragut loaded the bases with a bunt by Josephson and base hits by Howard and Perkins.

Three more singles by Becky McCraw, Manes and Lindsay Samarin, brought in four runs.

FHS 1 MARYVILLE 0

FHS defeated the Maryville Lady Rebels in 11 innings 1-0 May 4. Smith started on second base with the international tiebreaker rule in place in the bottom of the 11th.

Satterfield bunted Smith to third base, then Manes bunted Smith in for the winning run.
