Winning Lady Ad tennis run ends

Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett ended the Farragut Lady Admirals’ tennis run just one match short of an appearance in this week’s four-team Class AAA state tournament in Memphis.

Last Thursday’s 4-1 KDB win at Tyson Park was dominating — with FHS No. 1 Lauren Farlett’s 6-1, 6-0 win against Amy Beavers the lone Lady Ad win — but the District 4-AAA and Region 2-AAA champs received lots of praise from its coach.

“Them getting out of region was quite an accomplishment this year,” FHS head coach Betsy Sparks said. “This is a rebuilding year, I’m playing two freshmen out of the top five. This is a learning, growing team.”

FARLETT, SENIORS

Farlett, only a freshman and ranked No. 13 in the state in 16s and No. 63 in the south in 16s according to Sparks, was also one win away from a trip to the state singles tournament. Farlett lost to senior Laura Lynn Williams of West 6-2, 6-3 in the sectional finals May 18 at Tyson Park.

Saying Farlett was hampered by a blistered toe, “she wasn’t stepping into the ball,” Sparks said. “The balls she hit did have any pace on them. She wasn’t working the count very well.”

Farragut loses only two seniors, but ones Sparks said will definitely be missed.

“Helen (Hsu) has added a lot of depth to our team,” Sparks said. “She’s got a real good baseline deep game. Helen’s been able to step in at the number three spot and win most of her matches ... and she’s won several in spot (number) two.”

As for senior Lindsay Thrash, “she’s got a very consistent game, she’s got good strokes,” Sparks said.
