Two businesses combine to open Sports Corner

A popular Farragut sporting goods store has evolved into a new business in the Aspen Square shopping center.

John and Diane Mack, once partners in Teammates on West End Avenue, took over the business in 2000 and have since made changes and opened Sports Corner, 11110 Kingston Pike, just down from Sam & Andy’s restaurant.

“We just went with Sports Corner … thought it was easier to encompass both businesses,” Diane Mack said.

The business is a joint venture between Team Sports South, a sporting goods specialty business owned by the Macks, and Sports Graphics, owned by Tom and Barbara Gysin.

Sports Graphics specializes in making banners, magnets, helmet decals, trophies, plaques and other personalized items.

Examples of the Gysin’s work are on display at the Farragut store. Diane Mack takes orders from interested customers.

“I take the orders and pass it on to Barbara or have (the customer) call her,” she said.

Sports Corner opened in March 2003 after the Macks moved Team Sports South from Outlets Drive.

“When we moved to Outlets Drive, we just got out of the retail business and just sold to high schools, colleges and little leagues … it was team sales,” Diane Mack said.

The Macks moved back to Farragut because they say there is a need for a sporting goods store in the area.

The format may have changed, but the concept of team sales didn’t.

“Everything in the store is team priced,” Diane Mack said.

Team sales refers to a price determined for teams buying equipment in bulk, but customers can get that price for individual items at Sports Corner.

“In here I’ve tried to keep everything comparable to team prices everywhere else,” she added.

In addition to carrying a host of baseball equipment, Sports Corner can handle orders for uniforms and team T-shirts.

“Our main thing is team uniforms,” Diane Mack said. “We do league T-shirts or anything, for any team.”

Items requiring screen-printing or embroidery are handled by Double J Screen Printing in Maryville and Embroidery Place on Cedar Bluff.

Along with offering uniforms and baseball equipment, Sports Corner carries lacrosse equipment and is “one of the largest dealers of Under Armor in the area,” Diane Mack said.

Sports Corner has a large variety of the sports apparel designed to “whisk moisture away from your body,” she said.

If Sports Corner doesn’t have an item a customer wants in stock, Diane Mack added, they could order it.

“If people know what they want, I’ll order it if I can get it,” she said.

Another service offered at the store is customized letter jackets, done in-house by Phyllis Spetar, who has 10 years experience doing them.

“She goes out to the schools and shows the kids the jackets and takes orders,” Diane Mack said.

Sports Corner also has a bulletin board, she said, for coaches to get the word out about their teams.

“If any team wants to advertise, we have a bulletin board available for teams that want to post camps or sign-ups,” she added.
