Beckett gets RadioShack national teacher award

Farragut High School math teacher John Beckett was the recipient of the 2004 RadioShack National Teacher Award.

Beckett was one of 110 educators selected nationwide, and one of three award winners in the state of Tennessee. A $3,000 cash prize was presented to Beckett for his own personal use.

The RadioShack National Teacher Awards program is a corporate citizenship effort to improve math, science and technology education. Leonard Roberts, chairman and chief executive officer of RadioShack said, “By investing in teachers, RadioShack is strengthening communities and ensuring that American youth prosper.”

Beckett, who is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has 22 years of experience and teaches advanced placement calculus, advanced placement statistics, and honors pre-calculus. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education and a Masters of Science degree in math. Beckett was nominated for this award by a co-worker at the high school. He compiled essays detailing specifics about his teaching methods and techniques. Letters of recommendation from staff at FHS as well as outside sources were provided for Beckett in his quest for this award. “The award acknowledges my years of effort,” Beckett said. “It encourages me to press on.”

Beckett said that he requires his students to stay focused, but that there is a relaxed atmosphere in his class. “Lesson preparation is my first priority,” he said. Senior Annie Murphree said that Beckett had a positive influence on her academic career at FHS. “I had Mr. Beckett for statistics, and he was my favorite teacher,” Murphree said. She added, “He is a big believer in friendly competition. We all competed in class, but Mr. Beckett made sure that we helped each other out and cheered each other on.”

The program is open to all accredited public and private high schools. For more information about the National Teacher Awards, visit
