Diamond Ads open state tourney with 7-1 win
Bottom half of order lifts offense; Waldrop dominate on mound

Memphis — The bottom half of Farragut’s line-up provided most of the punch as the state’s top-ranked Class AAA Admirals — No. 4 nationally — opened defense of its 2003 state baseball title with a victory against their state championship game opponent from last season.

A four-run sixth-inning was plenty of insurance as Farragut (43-2 record) whipped Munford 7-1 in opening round action Wednesday in Memphis.

No. 5 hitter Scott Dean went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, No. 7 Riley Jennings was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in, No. 8 Drew Reagan had one hit and two RBIs, and No. 6 Philip Sherrard was 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Staff ace pitcher Kyle Waldrop went the distance, allowing one earned run and four hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts.

Up 3-0 going to the top of the sixth, Jennings’ two-RBI single made it 5-0 before Reagan’s RBI triple upped the lead to 6-0. Harrison Eldridge drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly. David King added one RBI earlier in the game.

The Admirals advance to Thursday’s second-round action against Hunters Lane, a 5-3 winner against Columbia Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. CDT.
