LetterToTheEditor — Reader praises governor

Dear Gov. Bredesen:

I want to congratulate you on a very successful session with the 103rd Tennessee General Assembly. What you achieved on behalf of the citizens of the Great State of Tennessee is remarkable. You inherited a state budget that was in terrible shape. Aside from that the legislature had been allowed to drift over the last few years due to a lack of leadership from the previous Governor’s Office.

Admittedly, I did not recognize all the symptoms, but confess that I understand a lot more now under your tutelage. As a freshman governor you achieved what one newspaper described as 99.6 percent of the spending objectives from a $24.1 billion state budget. Most impressive!

Among the controversial items you inherited was an out-of-control TennCare program, disparity in the state teacher pay system and a less than satisfactory workers’ compensation insurance system. All three issues were addressed and approved by the legislature. Other initiatives included a new driver’s license to keep illegal aliens from getting a license, a stronger seatbelt law and you merged the Commercial Enforcement Division with the Tennessee Highway Patrol giving Tennessee 200 more state troopers. These were just a few of the new bills passed by the 103rd General Assembly — action taken under your direction.

Every so often the God of heaven who created all of us makes a statement by giving his people the right leadership at the right time in history. It is obvious, Gov. Bredesen, that you have been anointed by our Lord Jesus Christ because he has given you wisdom and knowledge.

You asked for the prayers of the people of the Great State of Tennessee on election night when you claimed victory. Like a lot of others, I have prayed for you, your wife, your son, your mother, your staff and Deputy Gov. David Cooley every day.

Governor, you have been faithful and God has provided the people of Tennessee with a righteous governor.

I Timothy 2:1-4 (NIV) 1. “I urge, the, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone, 2. for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4. who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”

Governor Bredesen, it is my duty and privilege to pray for you.

Best regards,

Paul L. Comer Jr.
