FHS soccer team positioned for national title with No. 1 national rank
Final rankings early next week as top-10 teams finish their seasons

Leaning on the “LSU and Southern Cal” college football split national championship analogy, Farragut High School boys head soccer coach Wallie Culbreth said he can live with a split high school soccer national championship.

Painfully close to a share of a national title, the Admirals, who zoomed their way to a second straight Class AAA state title late last month with a final 24-2 record, are currently ranked No. 1 in the nation by the StudentSports poll.

Final Judgement Day will come next Monday according to Culbreth, when the final StudentSports and NSCAA polls will be released.

The latest NSCAA poll has FHS ranked No. 5 nationally, though Culbreth noted that two teams above FHS lost in their states’ playoffs and should be passed in the final NSCAA poll.

As for holding on to No. 1 in StudentSports, “It’s still to be determined whether anybody underneath us blows everybody else away to make an impression to climb back up there,” Culbreth said. “But I don’t see anybody passing us.”

According to Culbreth, No. 2 Richmond Academy (Augusta, Ga.) only “tied in the state finals for small schools” in Georgia. No. 3 Valley (West Des Moines, Iowa) No. 4 Grissom (Huntsville, Ala.) and No. 5 Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.) all lost prior to state finals.

As for making a claim to No. 1, “I’m going to do just like all the football teams, it don’t matter if it’s the Associated Press or the coaches’ poll, look at LSU and Southern Cal, they both claim to be national champions,” he said.
