Tarwater barely short of Olympics
- Thu, Jul, 15, 2004
Davis Tarwater was one former west side high school swimmers who came painfully close to qualifying for the 2004 Olympic Games later this summer in Athens, Greece.
Tarwater, a former Webb School star (Class of 2002) and Big Ten Conference record-holder in the 200-meter butterfly, took fourth in the 200 fly but needed to finish second to qualify for Athens. He finished less than a half-second behind both the second and third-place finishers, and his time of 1:57.82 was a personal record.
Recently graduated FHS star swimmer Anna Miller finished 31st in the 400 freestyle preliminaries (4:19.97), 49th in the 200 freestyle prelims (2:05.38) last week, and 32nd in the 800 freestyle prelims Monday.
Another former west side high school star swimmer, Webb Spartan graduate Reid Owen, attempted to earn a trip to Athens by qualifying in the 1,500 freestyle Tuesday (after press deadline).
