Waldrop, Morris top All-State diamond list

Nine west side high school baseball and softball players — including five from Webb School and three from Farragut — and one coach have recently earned All-State honors from the Tennessee Sports Writers Association.

FHS BASEBALL

Leading the way is recently-graduated Farragut pitcher/first baseman Kyle Waldrop, who in addition to leading the Admirals to its second consecutive Class AAA state title is currently playing professional rookie ball in Fort Myers, Fla. (see related story starting on page 13). In addition to his tiny 0.15 earned run average as the FHS staff ace in 2004 (14-0 record), Waldrop batted .493 with 16 home runs and 67 RBIs in 48 games.

Joining Waldrop is FHS pitcher Rob Catapano, who as a sophomore last spring moved up to become the team’s No. 2 pitcher behind Waldrop with a 12-0 record and miniscule 1.05 earned run average. The young lefty pitched a complete game 3-1 victory against Munford in the Class AAA state tournament.

Admiral head coach Tommy Pharr was named TSWA Coach of the Year after guiding his team to a 46-2 record, second straight Class AAA state title and a No. 3 final national rank.

WEBB BASEBALL

Spartan catcher Bubba Herbold was one of two TSWA Division II All-State catchers named, while outfielder Brian Cronk and utility honoree Nate Hall also earned All-State honors.

SOFTBALL HONOREES

Farragut staff ace pitcher Margaret Morris, a sophomore, earned TSWA Class AAA All-State softball honors by helping lead the Lady Admirals to their first state tournament appearance since 1999 in addition to the program’s first Region 2-AAA title since 1982 (38-9 overall record).

Christian Academy of Knoxville’s Lauren Jones was named TSWA Class A All-State as a utility player, while Webb stars Kaitlyn Maxwell (pitcher) and Amanda Kerns (outfielder) earned TSWA Division II All-State honors.
