Barn Bats earn 12U National Championship
- Thu, Jul, 22, 2004
Farragut Barn Bats assistant baseball coach Don Mabry said one key to his team’s success in capturing the USSSA 12 & Under AA National Championship last weekend was a balanced attack.
Winning seven of eight games against a 28-team field from six states during the eight-day tournament (July 11-18) in Cincinnati, the Barn Bats claimed the national championship with a 9-4 victory against Louisville, Ohio in Sunday’s title game. The Farragut-based champions (52-14 overall record) then proceeded to politely refuse all post-tournament individual awards, including the most valuable player award.
“They asked us to (accept individual award) but we declined because it was such a team effort,” coach Mabry said. “We looked at the numbers, the batting averages, the RBIs, we looked at all the stats, and it was spread so evenly across the board.”
