Led by Guinn, Garcia sisters make their mark in youth tennis

Guinn Garcia of Farragut, in her first year of playing 14-and-under girls tennis, won the Tennessee State Closed Tennis Tournament in Chattanooga, July 31 to Aug. 6, while losing only six games in five matches.

Guinn, seeded fourth, ended up beating the No. 1 seed, Brittney McBryar of Ooltewah, in the semifinals 6-1, 6-1. In the finals Guinn beat the No. 2 seed, Allison Hodges of Germantown, 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles, Guinn, 13, played with Hodges and lost in the finals to Laura Stack of Brentwood and Kellie Spilman of Cordova, 9-8.

GUINN’S OTHER SUCCESS

Earlier this year, Guinn won the Sportsmanship Award at the Southern Girls 14-Closed tennis tournament in Macon, Ga. The award was voted on by the tournament officials, umpires, referees and players of the tournament, recognizing her “courtesy, sportmanship, and good manners both on and off the court.”

The tournament consisted of more than 200 of the top 14 and under girls in the nine southern state region. Last year, Guinn also won the same Sportsmanship Award at the Southern Girls 12 and under in Columbia, SC.

Officials noted that it was the first time that a girl had won the award both in the Girls 12 and 14 division back-to-back.

Those two awards are not the only Sportsmanship Awards Guinn has received. Two years ago in the State Closed tourney, she won the Sportsmanship Award among all girls participating in the tournament, which ranged from ages 10 to 18.

Also, last year at a National Girls 12 tournament in Norcross, Ga, Guinn was recognized for her sportsmanship like conduct both on and off the court.

YOUNGER SISTER

Guinn’s younger sister, 10-year-old Vicki, lost in the semifinals of the Girls 10-and-under in Chattanooga to Jennifer Haydek, also from Knoxville, 6-2, 6-1. Battling for third-place, Vicki lost to Samantha Caswell of Lookout Mountain, 6-1,6-1.

Vicki teamed up with Jennifer Haydek and lost in the finals of the Girls 10 doubles to Emily Dunay of Franklin and Catherine Harrison of Germantown, 8-5.

PARENTS

Guinn and Vicki are daughters of Joe and Debbie Garcia.
