Heat softball finishes strong season as World Series runner-up

The Knoxville Heat 10-and- under fastpitch softball team, based out of Farragut, completed winning tournament season with a second place finish in the A division of the recent SEAA World Series in Sevierville and Pigeon Forge.

The Heat endured rain delays and 14 hours at the park to recover from a first round loss and fight its way through the losers bracket and reach the championship game against the Middle Valley Predators.

Coaches assessed the players’ performances: “Tournament highlights included outstanding pitching from Shawnee Shuler And Kaci Murr. Shawnee had her best outing of the year, dominating batters all week long, pitching shutouts against the Georgia Vipers and the Knoxville Thunder, and allowing only eight hits and three runs for the tournament.

“Kaci Murr completed the weekend with wins over the Frost Falcons and the Cleveland Tomboys, allowing only three earned runs. The defense was highlighted by the outfield play of Haley Taylor, Emily Colvin, and Hayley Newby, who all made unbelievable catches and plays.

“Alli Clevenger shored up second base with a heads-up play, throwing runners out at home and making clutch catches and plays to preserve shutouts against the Vipers and Thunder.

“Haley threw a perfect throw from centerfield to Megan who caught the ball at the exact same time the runner arrived, the two players collided at the plate, but Megan prevailed to make the last out of the game and preserve a shutout ... Erica Tuck continued to hit consistently as did Savanna Grubb, each having game-breaking hits.

Cameron Campbell continued to hit well, providing hits that broke open games against the Tom Boys and the Vipers.
