FHS golf boys tough in tourneys; Lady Admirals defeat Bearden

Having won the 16-team CEO-Roundtable Invitational in McMinnville Sept. 7, the Farragut High School boys golf team finished eighth among a rugged field of 15 teams from three states during the annual McDonald’s Invitational in Kingsport Sunday and Monday, Sept. 12-13.

"I thought they played well up there, especially on a challenging course," FHS head coach Mike Driver said of his four-man combined score of 617.

FARRAGUT BOYS

Blair White, who was tied for the McDonald’s tourney individual lead with a one-under-par 71 on day one, slipped back the second day (78) and finished 11th with 149.

Carl May, who opened with an impressive 71 on the first day, ended one-over-par (151). Brandon Bunn followed an opening round 77 with a 74 on day two (151).

"We shot nine strokes higher the second day, but most teams shot seven to ten strokes higher the second day," Driver said. "We finished ahead of some good teams. Webb, we finished one stroke ahead of them, and Science Hill (both 618).”

But Webb got its revenge at Willow Creek Golf Club one day later, as FHS boys finished last among a threesome of Webb and West on Tuesday, Sept. 14.

FARRAGUT GIRLS

In a three-way match with archrival Bearden and Cumberland Co. at Avalon Sept. 14, the FHS Lady Admirals used what Driver described as a "great round" from senior Megan Cox to beat BHS and Cumberland County.

Cox shot a one-under-par 35 for nine holes, while freshman Alyssa Randolph shot three-over-par 39. Despite a tough finish, "she played well," Driver said about Randolph.

Jillian Brodd shot 41, though only the top two scores counted for each team, as the Lady Admirals topped second-place BHS by four strokes (74 to 78).

Farragut and Bearden will square off in a dual match — both boys and girls — at Willow Creek to end the regular season Friday, Sept. 24. Opening tee-offs begin at 4 p.m.
