Class AAA state ranking another milestone for coach Courtney in his 9th season as FHS head coach

Eddie Courtney has reached two coaching milestones within a week, and both have catapulted his Farragut High School football team into high-class company on a statewide scale.

The unbeaten Admirals, enjoying their first 5-0 start in Courtney’s nine years as FHS head coach, are ranked No. 8 in the state among Class 5A teams as chosen by the Associated Press earlier this week.

It’s also the first time in his nine years that Farragut has cracked the top 10 in a statewide poll, that according to Courtney himself.

"I think it’s great for the kids who have worked hard, and I think it’s great they’ve been recognized," Courtney said. "Now they have a challenge to stay up there and get better … they feel a sense of pride about it."

Could this adversely affect a team and a program not used to such a spotlight?

"I think they’re showing some maturity and some great leadership,” Courtney said about the team putting in a "hard week" of practice (Sept. 20-24) prior to an open date on the schedule Sept. 24.

"I think they’ll accept the challenge to get better each week."

Although Courtney said the team has not formally addressed the subject of its top-10 ranking in any meetings between players and coaches, the FHS skipper nevertheless added there was "a little bit" of talk about it circling around the team.

"Our approach (is) we didn’t say anything about the ranking at all," Courtney said.
