Parkwest Cath lab marks 20th anniversary

This month marks the twentieth anniversary of the Cath lab at Parkwest Medical Center.

The lab recognized its anniversary at a celebration for employees and physicians from 2 to 4 p.m., Monday, Sept. 13, in the cath lab. The theme of the celebration, “Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence,” reflects the numerous awards the lab has received through the years, including the “Top 100 Heart Hospital” recognition by Solucient for four years, and consistently high rankings in patient satisfaction scores. Dr. Robert E. Gentry, the cardiologist who performed the first procedure in Parkwest’s cath lab on Sept. 11, 1984, continues to practice at Parkwest and attended the celebration.

A cardiac catheterization is a procedure using small catheters in a x-ray room to evaluate the arteries on a patient’s heart. If a patient has a blocked coronary artery, the cardiologist works to find the best and safest treatment for the blockage, including interventional tools such as stents, rotational atherectomy, angiojet and intravascular ultrasound.

“Since its beginning, and throughout all of the changes and growth we’ve experienced here, the Cath lab has always been dedicated to the highest level of patient care and service,” said Gentry.

Parkwest Medical Center is a full-service, general acute care facility providing state-of-the-art medical services to the residents of West Knox County and surrounding counties. Located on Park West Boulevard in West Knoxville, Parkwest is a member of Covenant Health, the region’s largest not-for-profit healthcare system, and offers care in cardiology, obstetrics, urology, joint replacement and diagnostics.
