U.S. Cellular kicks off commitment to soccer complex
Economic Impact for Knoxville valued at additional $34 million


“It’s official,” Jack Rooney, president/CEO of U.S. Cellular, told a group gathered to hear that the agreement with Knox County for the use of the mobile telephone company’s soccer complex off Dutchtown Road had been extended three years.

U.S. Cellular renewed its commitment to the Knox County community by extending the use of the U.S. Cellular Soccer Complex in West Knoxville. The six fields, located on approximately nine acres, are owned by U.S. Cellular, which is extending its offer of land use and facilities through 2007.

“We are pleased to extend this gift to the Knoxville community,” Rooney said, “The U.S. Cellular Soccer Complex has hosted both local and regional tournaments and we hope visitors enjoy the facility as much as we enjoy bringing it to them.”

Since the development of the soccer complex in 1997, approximately 62,000 kids have played here. This figure does not include the additional vendors, families and friends of the participants who have visited the complex for games and tournaments. The U.S. Cellular Soccer Complex has hosted 167 events in approximately 170 weeks that the park has been open. The complex is open from mid-march to November.


“From 1999 to 2003, we estimated the economic impact at nearly $34 million,” Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale said. “As far as quality of life impact, that’s something we have evidence of on the U.S. Cellular soccer fields every day – Knox County families coming together in the spirit of healthy competition and the smiles of our children as they kick their first ball or score the winning goal.”
