It was a dramatic finish to an unbeaten season, as the CBFO XFL Hoppers captured a Knox Metro Youth Football League championship at John Tarleton Park Saturday, Oct. 23.
Elijah Brown’s 55-yard touchdown run in the second quarter pulled CBFO even with Powell, 6-6, before the defenses stiffened. Overtime was required.
CBFO’s Kevin Gormley’s carried twice for 10 yards and an OT score and a 12-6 lead that would hold up.
The CBFO defense then came up big by recovering a fumble after stacking up a runningback at the 3-yard line on a third-down run. Powell’s six points were the first allowed by CBFO all season.
Todd Kelly’s Hoppers finished its championship season with an 8-0-1 overall league record. While all players were recognized in a post-game ceremony, coach Kelly presented Elijah Brown a special award.
Meanwhile, Mark Jetton’s CBFO XFL Cutters finished with a strong 7-1-1 record and a 2nd-place finish after losing its first game of the season, 8-0 to Pilot, in the title game Saturday.
