The burning of the American flag, is it a political statement or just plain ignorant vandalism?

Last weekend the giant American flag that has flown above Patriotís Corner for more than 10 years was taken down and burned at the base of its staff.

No message was left. No one took responsibility for what appears to be a senseless act of cowardice.

The flag, which was valued at more than $4,000, stands as a symbol to all who have fought for it and all who value the freedom it represents.

A part of that freedom is the freedom to own property and fly the American flag unencumbered by othersí political views.

Nowhere in the laws of the land or in the U.S. Constitution is a right given to destroy private property.

Steve Williams, owner of Patriotís Corner, has posted a $5,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators.

It is our hope that someone collects the reward and the culprits who committed this crime are punished to the fullest extent of the law.

On another note, it is sad that we must bid farewell to farragutpress columnist and Grassy Valley Baptist Church pastor Dr. Brian Johnson, who has accepted a pastorís position in North Carolina.

We will miss his weekly reminders of how a spiritual life can bring gladness to oneís heart.

God bless Brian and his family.
