Queens’ kings on the field
Staff Reports - Thu, Nov, 18, 2004
Three former westside high school soccer players have not only earned All- Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference honors in college, but also led Queens University of Charlotte (N.C.) to the NCAA Men’s Division II regional tournament.
Former Bearden All-state midfielder Demetrius Donald (top picture in white), his roommate, defender Michael Hensen from Farragut, and Queens goalkeeper Bruce Mottern, a former Admiral goalie, each received high praise from Queens head coach Fred Norchi.
“Our goalkeeper Bruce Mottern is a rock and provides an amazing amount of security for the team,” Norchi said. “We have several scoring threats from talented attackers such as ... Demetrius Donald ... while our defense is outlined by Mike Hensen.”
Though the Royals were eliminated by Clayton State in the opening round of the 24-team NCAA tournament at home Nov. 11, Queens finishes the season 14-1-3 overall and 10-0-2 in the CVAC.
