FHS dominates, but Ice ’Dawgs earn tie


Despite being outshot 25-5, the Bearden Ice ’Dawgs managed a late goal to tie archrival Farragut 2-2 Thursday, Nov. 12, in high school hockey action at the Icearium.

Bearden’s Michael Vekasi punched home the tying goal five feet in front of the net with with 2:33 left in the game after receiving a feed from Daane Blocksma, who outbattled a Farragut player along the boards behind the FHS goal before the critical assist.

Nathan Moore broke a scoreless drought and gave Farragut a 1-0 lead late in the second period, scoring in front of the net. Jesse Volpe had the assist.

Ben Jardet pulled Bearden even with 7:22 to play in the final period with a scoring shot from a sharp angle to the left of the goal from about 20 feet out. Andrew Nickels had the assist.

The Admirals needed less than 70 seconds to answer, as Volpe punched home the go-ahead goal in front of the net with 6:15 left. Tommy Morgan assisted.

While FHS head coach Craig Swinson expressed frustration over his team’s inability to convert scoring chances, BHS skipper John Cox praised Ice ’Dawgs goalie Logan Baker for success handling constant pressure.
