The City of Chattanooga recently announced that more than $2.1 billion was being invested in development citywide and of those monies $875 million in the downtown area alone.

Administrators for Chattanooga tout that a ďmajor catalyst for the investment that has occurred downtown has been the implementation of the $120 million 21st Century Waterfront Plan, a project which will be completed by May 1, 2005, and which relied on no City of Chattanooga general funds.Ē

Itís no secret that Chattanooga has a much more attractive downtown than Knoxville ever could envision and the city seems to be able to do it without increasing property taxes.

Knox County and the City of Knoxville should take a hard look at the successes that Chattanooga has enjoyed.

While everything in Hamilton County and Chattanooga are not ideal, County Mayor Claude Ramsey and other county and Chattanooga officials seem to be making an effort to make things better for its citizens and not put the burden on its citizens by raising taxes or creating new ones.

Itís something to think about.
