• The Fourth Annual Knoxville Christian School Classic Basketball Tournament begins Friday, Jan. 7, through Sunday, Feb. 13, at KCS. Boys and girls teams in four age categories — 7 to 14 — are invited to sign-up: Instructional (ages 7-8); Training (ages 9-10); Junior Varsity (11-12) and Varsity (13-14). Age of players at each level must have been that age as of Sept. 1, 2004. Entry fee is $275. For more information, call Eddie Neely at 607-6664.

• The YWCA of Knoxville and Blount County will conduct the 2005 Race Against Racism beginning with registration at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Mount Moriah FBC Church on Western Avenue. The 5K run and 1 Mile walk begins at 2 p.m., following a race course through the Mechanicsville Commons neighborhood. A $20 entry fee postmarked or presented at the YWCA office by Friday, Jan. 14, ($25 after Jan. 14) provides each runner or walker with a long-sleeve shirt, refreshments and entertainment courtesy of local groups. Teams of 10 or more that participate in the event will receive a special reduced rate per entry. For more information or to receive a registration form, please contact the YWCA at 865-523-6126 or go to www.ywcaknox.com or www. ktc.org and download an application. Proceeds from the Race Against Racism will continue to support the programs of the local YWCA of Knoxville and Blount County. The race will be held under the supervision of the Knoxville Track Club. During the height of the civil rights movement in the U.S., the YWCA was at the forefront, establishing its National Office of Racial Justice in 1965 and adopting its one imperative — “to eliminate racism wherever it exists” — in 1970. Today, hundreds of YWCA affiliates offer thousands of programs and services designed to eliminate racism, achieve racial justice and embrace diversity.
