MEDIC announces blood drives for January

MEDIC of Knoxville asks that Knox area residents observe National Blood Donor Month in January and add a good deed to their New Year’s “Resolution List” for 2005 — become a regular 56 day blood donor.

MEDIC officials said, “If all eligible donors gave every 56 days there would never be a shortage of blood for the 21 counties and 28 area hospitals MEDIC serves. It’s quick and easy and a single donation can save up to three lives.”

“Blood bands will be given away to donors in hopes of the bracelet serving as a reminder that there’s always a need for blood,” Christi Stalans, MEDIC public relations, said. MEDIC blood bands are free for those who donate and there is a very limited supply. Donations may be made at the following locations or at MEDIC’s 1601 Ailor Ave. office in Knoxville:

• Tuesday, Jan. 4, Big K-Mart-Halls, 6909 Maynardville Hwy, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Medic Mobile — Black Oak Plaza.

• Wednesday, Jan. 5, Wal-Mart-Chapman Highway, 7420 Chapman Hwy., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Medic Mobile.

By donating blood, donors are covered under MEDIC’S Family Blood Coverage Program. Family coverage means that a pint of blood donated to the MEDIC Regional Blood Center will ensure the donor’s family (IRS dependents) does not have to pay blood supply processing fees at any hospital in the United States.
