Mayor, Commissioners tour Cedar Bluff schools

School Board chair Dr. Dan Murphy and Fifth District School Board member Karen Carson hosted Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale, Knox County Commis-sioners Mike Hammond and Craig Leuthold and PTA members on a tour of Cedar Bluff schools Wednesday, Dec. 8.

Carson said she wanted people to realize how serious the problems are in the 27-year-old temporary buildings. “People think these West Knox schools are the pampered schools. They’re not. There are major safety issues here,” she said. “You can walk right in the intermediate school and pass a classroom full of kids before ever reaching the office.”

Ragsdale said the group toured Cedar Bluff “because we are visiting a variety of schools. Last month we were in Halls; we’re going to Gibbs next, then we’ll go to Farragut. ... The biggest challenge is balancing all the needs — the parks, roads, senior centers. How do you build schools and still give teachers raises, and put books in the library? I’m pleased with what we’re doing now, but I want to get better and we will.”
