• To celebrate Bearden High School baseball team’s completion of a new team room at Phil Garner Field, Friday, Jan. 28, there will be an open house and fund-raising supper in the school cafeteria beginning at 6 p.m. before the home basketball games against West. Second year head coach Matt Buckner “has rallied the Bulldog Baseball Dugout Club and many baseball alumni to complete this long-time dream of the program,” BHS booster Buddy Heins said. “With the addition of the team room, the facilities at Phil Garner Field are second to none. Over $35,000 was raised with the help of the Bearden High School Foundation and through gifts-in-kind to complete the team room.”

• The annual Bluegrass Baseball League will begin practices Tuesday, March 1. The parent and/or guardian of any boys and girls in kindergarten, first- or second-grade who would like to play should contact Rocky King at 546-0500 (daytime) or 690-3551 (evening) to request a registration form. The 2005 registration fee is $60. The season runs Monday, April 4, through Thursday, May 19, with the annual season-end party on Friday, May 20, at Celebration Station. • Claire Galdun, a 15-year-old sophomore at Webb School and swimmer with the Pilot Aquatic Club, has been chosen to attend the United States Swimming National Select Camp beginning today (Thursday) Jan. 20 until Jan. 23 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Selected based on merit in individual events, Galdun was chosen because of her 8:50.19 time in the 800-yard freestyle.

• Knoxville Christian School’s boys varsity basketball team recently won back-to-back games, giving it three wins in its first season as a high school program. After beating Knoxville Baptist Christian 72-56, KCS beat Apostle Christian Academy of Maryville 77-41 Monday, Jan. 10. Against Knoxville Baptist, five KCS players scored in double figures, led by Andrew Bissell with 23 points. Bissell then produced his third straight 20-plus-point game, scoring 22 against ACAM. David Amos added 18, followed by Glenn Honeycutt with 17 and Clayton Woodward with 10 points.

• Allison Harrell, a 2001 Farragut High School graduate, recently finished her soccer career at Maryville College — a career that included four years on the All-conference academic team and 10th overall in assists. Team captain for the Lady Scots as a senior, Harrell’s career contributions also included helping lead MC to four consecutive regular season conference championships and three straight conference tourney titles. An art major at MC, Harrell is the daughter of James and Gwen Harrell.

• Eddie Courtney, Farragut High School varsity football head coach, said the FHS football program is seeking to honor past FHS players within the walls of its new fieldhouse. Courtney is seeking the names of FHS football players between 1947 and 1983 who earned any of the following post-season honors: All-state, All-East Tennessee, and/or All-county (including All-KFL). In addition, the FHS football skipper said he is seeking 8 X 10 photos of any former FHS player who went on to play college football (alumni or their relatives are asked to submit pictures, which Courtney said would be copied and returned). • “A Lead-off Celebration of a New Season of Farragut Baseball” will kick off later this month, as the Farragut High School Baseball Dugout Club prepares for its Third Annual major fund-raiser Diamond Dinner and silent auction. The event begins at 6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 27, at First United Methodist Church, 12733 Kingston Pike. Local radio talk show host Hallerin Hilton Hill is scheduled guest speaker. Dinner is provided. The public is invited to purchase tickets costing $20 apiece in advance from the FHS Dugout Club by calling Robert Cheek at 671-9920 (or e-mail rcheek3335@aol.com.) or by calling Christy Judkins at 675-6009 (judkinsrr@juno.com). All proceeds benefit the FHS Dugout Club and the Farragut Admirals baseball program.
