Burchett casts vote for Wilder
- Thu, Jan, 20, 2005
In what some deem as a slap in the face to the Tennessee Republican Party and state Republicans, State Sen. Tim Burchett, R-District 7, along with fellow Republican Mike Williams, broke party ranks in order to cast his vote to re-elect Democrat John Wilder as Senate speaker and lieutenant governor.
Burchett’s action prompted State Safety Commissioner Fred Phillips to assign a Tennessee state trooper to accompany the Knoxville senator when the leadership vote was cast. Republicans hold a 17-16 majority in the Senate. What do you think about Sen. Burchett’s action? Is this a disservice to Republicans that voted for him? Should representatives be allowed to cross lines during leadership votes? Let us know what you think. Call presstalk and let your voice be heard. Presstalk 671-TALK.
