West End eatery changes hands

Farragut residents Jim and Lori Klonaris have sold Tijuana Taco’s West End Avenue location to Angela Lin, who has been the restaurant manager for the last year.

“We sold it,” Jim said, “But we still own the company that owns the name Tijuana Taco.”

Noting that this purchase is not a franchise operation, Jim said it is “more like a limited licensing agreement.

“The owners don’t pay residuals to me,” he added. “They buy the assets of the business. It’s theirs.”

The 4,000-square-foot Farragut location opened in the fall of 2002. The success of Tijuana Taco sparked the opening of the “Parkway” restaurant, on the corner of Northshore and Keller Bend Road in June 2004 and the Market Square location in the former Watson’s department store building in early fall 2004.

“Parkway and Market Square are owned by separate individual investment groups,” Jim said. “We are hoping to open a few more locations in time.”

Jim said this concept is an excellent way for someone who has wanted to enter the restaurant business an opportunity to purchase an already established and profitable business.

“There are certain rules and regulations that each of the restaurants have to follow,” Jim said. “They can’t make drastic changes to the restaurant concept or the menu and must abide by certain marketing procedures.”

Lin has been managing the West End location and said she helped open the “Parkway” restaurant as well.

“Jim gave me the choice of any of the three restaurants to purchase and I picked this one,” she said. Lin added she likes the older building (formerly Mr. Gatti’s Pizza), the close proximity to the schools and to the heart of Farragut.

Noting that Jim and Lori have been very helpful throughout the buying process, Lin said, “Jim told me to surround myself with good people that I trust.” Adding that she has prior experience in the restaurant business and is familiar with the high turnover rate, she said, “that really hasn’t been a problem here.”

Lin’s beer permit with the town of Farragut goes before the Farragut Beer Board Feb. 24, and the ownership transaction should be complete Monday, Feb. 28.
