We are distressed to hear of the injuries sustained by Mary Beeler at the intersection of Parkside Drive and Lovell Road last Friday.

What is more disturbing is that her injuries probably could have been avoided had common sense prevailed and a citizen not attempted to take the law into his own hands.

As Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk stated, citizens should report criminal activity to police and leave it at that. Let police do the work they are trained to do.

The Farragut community is fortunate to have a highly trained law enforcement body watching over its streets, namely the Knox County Sheriff’s Department. We are also fortunate in the eastern area of farragutpress coverage to have the Knoxville Police Department.

Even television shows such as “America’s Most Wanted” advise citizens to notify police and not take action — not only for their safety but the safety of innocent bystanders.

Let’s leave John Wayne on the movie screen.
