SoccerDawgs get two wins in Memphis

The Bearden Bulldogs fell to Father Ryan 2-1 to finish up the Christian Brothers Invitational Sunday, March 20, in Memphis.

Rico Carter scored the Bulldogs’ only goal in the game.

Even though Bearden (2-1-1 record coming back from spring break entering the week) lost in its final game in the tournament BHS head coach Eric Turner was pleased with the effort exhibited by his team.

“I thought we played really well, we came out probably in the top three teams. All of them are top five teams in the state for division two,” Turner said. “(Memphis University School) was the state champion last year and Christian Brothers won the year before that so we were happy with the results from those two games for sure.”

As for the BHS players that stood out this weekend in the tournament, “James Totten, and Brian Walker, our goalie, had exceptional tournaments and (Kris) Gustafson played really well up top,” Turner said.

Turner said it is important for his team to be tested early in the season in a tournament like this — not only due to the level of competition but in the long run playing games such as this helps with team unity.

“That’s the best we are going to get right there and Christian Brothers will probably be the best team we are going to see all year,” the BHS skipper said. “We play those games simply so that at the end of the season you have been tested already. So going up there and playing those kind of games brings the team together.”
