- Thu, Apr, 21, 2005
The National Crime Prevention Council offers these tips to avoid theives stealing your identity using discarded tax information.
• Shred documents with personal information thieves can use such as phone bills, credit card receipts and mail order catalogs.
• Never give out your personal information over the phone or Internet unless you have initiated the contact.
• Remove your social security number from personal checks or your driver’s license and place your SSN card some place other than your wallet.
• Carefully review monthly credit card and bank statements for unfamiliar transactions.
• Check your credit records once a year with the three major credit bureaus.
• Retrieve your mail from your mailbox promptly and if you are away for a few days, have the post office hold it. Thieves “shop” mailboxes for identity information.
• Report suspicious activity right away.
