Two out of three for ’Dawgs in Calia

The Bearden Bulldogs lost to McMinn County 9-6 to close out the annual Kevin Calia Tournament Friday, April 22, at BHS.

The Kevin Calia Tournament is a round-robin format that Oak Ridge hosts with the help of Bearden. The Bulldogs swept a doubleheader on Thursday against Gibbs and Karns, but lost to McMinn County in the early game Friday.

Thunderstorms rolled in and the nightcap against Powell was stopped in the fourth and cancelled.

The Bulldogs overall record sits at 20-6-1 and 8-3 in District 4-AAA entering the week.

A lack of pitching for BHS in the McMinn County game contributed to the loss, but BHS head coach Matt Buckner isn't worried.

"We played five games this week," he said. "Our guys should be rested for this upcoming week."

The Bulldogs face a big week with three district games. Bearden travels to West Monday, playing host to Maryville Wednesday (both after press deadline) and travel to Heritage today (April 28).

As for the other games in the tournament, the Bulldogs beat Gibbs 14-5 in the opening game Thursday, April 21, at BHS.

Senior catcher Brett Basham had a home run and a double. Cameron Bowlin also homered and Wayne Miller and Jonathan Reynolds hit doubles.

Matt Schuchmann earned the victory on the mound by pitching a complete game.

“Schuchmann pitched really well and we hit really well again," Buckner said.

The Bulldogs finished the night game with a 5-2 victory over Karns, Thursday, April 21, at BHS.

Hunter Daniel earned the win on the mound by pitching six strong innings and Kendale Roach came in to close the door in the seventh.

"Hunter Daniel had a really good outing. I left him in a little too long and a guy hit a homer in the seventh off him and then I brought in Roach," Buckner said. "Karns is a solid team so it was a good win for us."

Wayne Miller tripled and Roach and Kendal Wells each doubled for Bearden.

Four home runs propelled Bearden past thet William Blount Governors 14-2 in six innings Wednesday, April 20, at WBHS.

Roach, Basham, Reynolds and Dawson Halliday hit home runs for the Bulldogs.

Chris Goetz was the winning pitcher.

“We played really well,” Buckner said. “That was a big game and it locked us up in third place in our district.”
