SoccerDawgs win two of three; Culbreth optimistic about Ads

ATHENS — While winning two games at the McMinn County Tournament over the weekend, the Bearden Bulldogs suffered only its second loss on the season vs. the host Cherokees.

After a 3-1 win vs. Gallatin Friday, April 22, and a 1-0 victory vs. Rossview Saturday, Bearden fell to McMinn 3-1 Sunday. Jay Lutz scored the only BHS goal, as the SoccerDawgs’ record stood at 9-2-4 overall entering the week.

Against Gallatin, Kris Gustafson, Aaron Schoenfeld and Ryan Radcliffe scored for BHS.

Against Rossview, Gustafson scored the game’s only goal.

Meanwhile, the optimism of Farragut head coach Wallie Culbreth is growing after his Admirals whipped Maryville and Pope John Paul II last week.

“I’ve gotten everybody back now, and I’m a different team than what the record shows,” Culbreth said of his team overcoming injuries and suspensions to post a 6-5-2 record to start the week. “Now that I have the full team back, we’re starting to click on all cylinders.”

Ben Backstrom’s first-half goal, assisted by Brad Pease, was enough to beat Maryville 1-0 Tuesday, April 19, at FHS. “Ben Backstrom has played real well, and I’ve changed Brad Pease from defense and moved him to the midfield and he’s done a superb job over there,” Culbreth said.

One of Culbreth’s fresh faces, sophomore Robert Fisher, led the way with two goals in a 4-1 victory vs. Pope John Paul II Saturday, April 23, at FHS. “Robert Fisher was a pleasant surprise, he came up big,” Culbreth said. Backstrom and Scott Kensell also scored.
