Region loss ends Bearden ‘great year’

All good things must come to an end eventually and the Bearden Bulldogs baseball team experienced that first hand after losing to Heritage 3-2 on Tuesday, May 10, in the District 4-AAA Tournament at Farragut High School.

"I hate for us to go out like that but its OK," BHS head coach Matt Buckner said. "Heritage did a great job and I give them all the credit in the world."

The Bulldogs received a good outing on the mound from junior ace Chris Goetz, but were unable to get anything going offensively until the seventh inning when Wayne Miller hit a two-run home run, scoring Bearden's only two runs of the game.

BHS finished its season with a 26-9-1 overall record.

"We had a great year, I can't complain about twenty-six-and-nine," Buckner said. "Our program is right where it needs to be and I'm just going to keep building to get better."

"I hate the way it ended, but we had a good season," Buckner said. "We have a young staff, those guys did a good job, we had some guys that had some really big years and we get the majority of them back and I'm looking forward to next year."

The Bulldogs will have all but two returning for next year's team. Senior catcher Brett Basham and pitcher Matt Schuchmann were big contributors for BHS this year, but Buckner is confident that his team will be strong for next season.

"Basham is a pretty good loss and Schuchmann gave us some good innings too so we will miss those guys but we have the core of our team coming back and we will be ready for next year," Buckner said about the 2006 outlook.
