BHS boys, Farlett seek state tennis Staff Reports - Thu, May, 19, 2005
Rallying with a pair of doubles wins, the Bearden High School boys tennis team edged Oak Ridge 4-3 Thursday, May 12, to win the Region 2-AAA title in Oak Ridge and reach sectional play this week.
A sectional win Friday at Dobyns-Bennett earns Bearden a TSSAA Class AAA state tourney trip next week in Memphis.
Hunter Maltsberger and Jimmy Fulton, Bearden’s No. 1 doubles team, beat Rob Koehler and Patrick Uzzle 7-6 (10-8), 6-3. At No. 2 doubles, Bulldogs Chris Acker and Ben Rahnema defeated Eric Darko and Travis Witherington 7-5, 6-0. Acker and Rahnema also accounted for Bearden’s singles victories.
Meanwhile, Farragut girls No. 1 player Lauren Farlett, fresh off a District 4-AAA individual championship where the sophomore did not lose a single game after beating BHS No. 1 Helen Fisun in the finals, is also looking to advance to state with a region crown earlier this week (after deadline).
Maltsberger and Fulton are looking to do the same in doubles after a district tourney finals victory against Justin Elrod and Jonathan Houck of Farragut.
The FHS girls team lost 5-4 to William Blount in the district tourney title match despite singles wins from Farlett, Chelsea Delay and Whitney Noble.
