Boating safety this summer

At the height of watercraft season as the July 4 weekend rapidly approaches, are you concerned about boating safety on area lakes such as Ft. Loudoun, Tellico, Norris and Watts Bar?

Is the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, with few boats patrolling a waterway stretch from Ft. Loudoun north to Norris Lake, adequately supervising the lakes and limiting serious violators who potentially endanger lives, for example, by speeding or operating a boat or personal water craft while intoxicated? Are mandatory TWRA-issued Boating Safety Education Certificates for teenage boat operators (born after Jan. 1, 1989) enough in terms of legislating safer waterways? Should boat operation by children ages 10-to-12 be outlawed entirely, not just limited depending on boat horsepower or adult supervision as TWRA regulations currently allow. What do you think? Let us know at 671-TALK (671-8255).
